Guide Tile & design
Tile & design guide
With over 35 years of tile installation experience in Guelph, here is the advice homeowners ask for most: tile sizing, subfloor preparation, styles that last and how your home is cared for during the job.
01
Choosing tile
How do I choose the right tile size for my space?
Tile size depends on both the room's square footage and its layout. Large-format tiles create a seamless, modern look with fewer grout lines, which can make small spaces appear larger. Smaller tiles or mosaics provide better grip and conform better to slopes in shower pans. We work closely with you to balance proportion and practicality.
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Both are made from clay, but porcelain is fired at higher temperatures, making it denser, harder and less porous than ceramic. Porcelain is ideal for high-traffic entryways and outdoor spaces, while ceramic is versatile, lightweight and perfect for kitchen backsplashes and bathroom walls.
How do I select a style that stays relevant over time?
Focus on timeless materials, classic patterns like herringbone or subway, and neutral palettes for permanent surfaces. You can bring in current colour trends through accents, paint or fixtures that are easy to update later. We work with you to make sure your design complements your home's architecture.
02
Preparation & installation
Why is preparation so critical before tiling?
A durable tile installation starts with what lies underneath. Subfloors and walls must be completely level, structurally sound and clean. For wet areas like showers, proper waterproofing membranes are vital to prevent future water damage. Thorough preparation ensures your tile will not crack, shift or fail over time.
